Whelm Is Good – Overwhelm Not So Much
My dear Mother died a few years ago and I was left with what seemed like a mountain of papers that must of meant something at some time. I was struck with what an impact that had on me. In defense of Mom, she was organized to the point where she kept everything…just in case.
As the personal representative of her estate, I was bequeathed with the dubious responsibility of discovering what the heck all this dreaded stuff was. It took me forever to dig, explore, investigate and mine out the real value. Due diligence of this magnitude, well…
Fun? No. Important? Yes. Do I want to do that again? Emphatically no!
That brought me to, what about you, Lee? What’s the state of the state of your dreaded stuff? And, more to the point, what will you do today that will bring space, grace and energy to yourself and to others–now and in the future?
Loving others is my gig. I also value supporting myself. Stuff plays a part in this love and support. Clutter is a drain—a fast flowing drain—that takes away. More, more, more seems to be the mantra of the day and I can fall for that! So I went on the hunt. I began looking, like a detective, at where the obvious—and not so obvious– areas of clutter were in my life.
Physical Clutter
This is the area that hit my radar first. Any visual–right-out-there, in-your-face–clutter creates an immediate energy drag for me. I am distracted. Imagine my mind like a pin ball machine of distractions. That’s it. It’s a productivity nightmare.
I feel frustrated. I feel shame for not keep up with this stuff. Instead, I move it around, look at at, and don’t let it go.
I am committed to keeping my life moving forward. So I am faithful about tackling visible clutter routinely. When I do, I use my time, my space and my energy effectively. But I believe there’s a better, more moment-by-moment living with physical clutter–that’s the long-haul goal.
There’s more.
Mental Clutter
This is covert clutter—the inside kind. It’s a sneaky and not-so-nice kind of clutter that can litter my mind with all kinds of distractions.
Two covert areas of clutter affect me. First, there’s a mountain of meaningless and, sometimes, mean-spirited thoughts or comments that have a “not enough-ness” tone. And second, there are the dastardly detours that have me flying from one thing to the next. Either one is a killer for me. They drain my energy as quick as a rodeo rider flies off a bull. They also serve as a time thief who isn’t out to steal a few items—this thief was it all. Can you relate?
It’s Your Energy
It’s yours. It’s mine. We get to claim it.
We get to reclaim, rethink, revamp, re-gift, redirect, recycle–and redo our physical space, stuff, papers, files or whatever. We’re in the driver’s seat if we want to be. Find that simple place that brings us comfort, peace, clarity and a support. Now that is life giving.
Our culture would love us to believe that stuff is the final frontier. It’s not. You know that–so do I. It is simplicity and unencumbered space that supports us is real freedom. Believe that’s true? If you do, then you might want to come to a party!
Declutter Fun Coming Up
Spend some time with other women on Saturday, March 27, at the **Free** Declutter Party Virtual Retreat. It’s a place of support, tips, action and accountability. Check it out. Clean it out. Move it out. That’s what we’ll be doing. If you’d like to join us, you can find the details and SIGN UP HERE. I hope to “see” you then.
May you be the captain of your energy and space ship—now and forever more!
Blessings, Lee

i am always cleaning up, throwing away stuff and organizing papers, mail, etc. it takes really no energy..i just do it as i do my life. sometimes on a sat morning I’ll do a ” put things away” half hour and just put things back where they live. At our mountain home our theme is ( one of them and yes , my grandkids know it too) A Place for Everything and Everything in It’s Place.
If i buy someting i determine ” where this lives” and then ,when not using it..put it there. Dave knows where i keep things and visa versa. it makes for home that is a wonderful workshop of love to live in. and create in. and dance in too.
