Let’s Get Naked

June 29, 2010

I just drove cross-country from Wisconsin to California. On the way, I visited some of my old stomping grounds. It brought up lots of memories about relationships and what was very different then compared to now.

In the 1950s, we didn’t have a television. Today I have a 32″ flat screen monster and it consumes my time. In the “old” days (as my kids call them) we played–jacks, kickball, pogo sticks, horses, critter finding, games, etc. Now we get together and can be distracted by technology.

I don’t think this is a gross generalization. I’ve observe others and myself and it’s pretty easy to be attached to and diverted by our technology.

Today, when get together, we frequently aren’t really together. Someone is doing something with technology. There’s a third party that is intruding.  Cell phones. Text messages. iPods. Computers. Televisions. We’re can be plugged in, zoned out, and not present. Multi-tasking is the norm.

A Naked Tech Retreat

Imagine what it could be like to relate with zero technology distractions.

  • How would it feel to be fully present with someone else?
  • What would you need to change in your life to reconnect one-to-one without distractions?
  • Who do you know that you need to reconnect with in an intimate way?

Maybe separating from your technology is a bit scary. It is for me. But I care about my relationships and I am willing to fully honor my time with people by giving attention to what really matters. The relationship.

Go to lunch with a friend without your phone. Have a family Tech Free Night and play games. Go “tech-naked” and spend a day in nature. Journal–alone. There’s lots of options.

This is not an all or nothing invitation. It’s a try it out–see what happens retreat. I’m up for it. Are you?

Leave comments on my website and let me know the how you’ve experienced relating this way? What’s worked? What hasn’t? How has it felt for you? Anything surprising happen?

Hope to hear from you!

Blessings, Lee
