“Never let the fear of striking out get in your way.”
~ George Herman “Babe” Ruth
I’m an intelligent woman who has been threaten and controlled by this forbidding fear of these website, HTML, meta, domain, internet, social networking kind of things. I thought if I mess too much with this stuff, I might just get sucked into my computer screen (lame joke, I know, but I’m 63 so give me a break!).
I’m a solopreneur that is going in a whole new direction with my coaching and retreat business. I’m at a crossroad. So I thought, now what? What do I need to get me from point A to point B?
My conversation with myself (don’t tell me you don’t have them?) went something like this:
- Lee, you’re bright, capable and haven’t evaded a challenge in your entire life!
- So what’s with the standstill? Get going, girlfriend!
- Well, I’ve tried learning online and that’s a joke. They’re talking a foreign language!
- Okay then, what are your options?
- Gee Lee, why don’t you ask God to bring an awesome resource into your life to help you? That worked—I got to the end of my personal rope–and chose to invite BIG HELP!
Low and behold, several weeks later, Mynde Mayfield showed up with a whole lot of tech savviness going on. I know this one dates me, but she’s been like the cartoon character, “Mighty Mouse”—“Here she is to save the day!” She more than gave me the tools and confidence to be proficient with Blogger. But, guess what? It wasn’t too much later than I realized that I wanted more and I have moved on to WordPress. When you have a secret weapon in your back pocket, the sky is the limit. (FYI, Mynde is my “back pocket” Tech Coach. She is beyond marvelous. Her blogs are full of free valuable information and her tech coaching and workshops are bar none the best.)
So what is the point of this story? I learned some valuable lessons through this and maybe they will resonate with you.
- It’s okay not to know everything—after all, who really does know everything?
- Expectations can be unrealistic and unkind.
- There are always resources out there.
- It’s helpful to be open to not knowing.
- Age had no relevance to getting where you want to go.
- There is always a way of getting from point A to point B—coaches specialize in it! Gee really?
- Everyone has some source–God. Higher Power, whatever.
- Heart-driven resources are out there. Everyone isn’t a sales geek looking to reach into your wallet.
- Expectations suck.
- Intentions rock. Basking in my intention (which is my commitment to being grace-filled and loving to myself regardless) brings peace.
What’s your “that thing I cannot do?” Do you have a stuck place? What you say to yourself and how your treat yourself matters. I would challenge you to think about a new way of loving yourself along the journey. You have an important calling–and you’re on your way. Know what? We all need help. So who’s your “Mighty Mouse”–your resource to support you today? Is it a friend to listen? Is it a coach? Is it being quiet in nature? Is it a retreat? Is it a class to help you understand something?
Your intention towards yourself supports you in the process of loving yourself in spite of your circumstances. Now isn’t that a fantastic way to do life?
A year ago I went on a marvelous retreat given a fabulous coach, Helene Van Manen. For the first time, I did an intention board. I pasted all kinds of images and photos on the board. This process scared the heck out of me because I thought it was “woo-woo” thing. What I found out it is a very powerful tool–and actually a very sacred process.
At the time, my primary intention was to love myself in my grief. I picked this picture of a woman with her eyes closed with one hand over her heart and the other over her stomach. The heart I understood, since my Mother had just died and my son was going through a painful marriage break up. The stomach I didn’t understand for six month until I was diagnosed with an eating disorder. Today when I look at that intention board, I smile because all of my intentions around myself are complete.
It’s a God thing for me. It’s a heart thing for me. It’s a love thing for me. It can be whatever it is for you. I ask you to consider spending time with your intention around how you are with you! There is no such thing as “that thing you cannot do.” Blessings to you!

i am daily doing things that have a huge learning curve for me Lee…and loved your post about this. The thing about this type of learning is that it can be tiring and then for me, the emotional eating comes in. For today, i affirm my power to be in balance no mattter what happens and return my attention to healthy meals, healthy snaks and letting go of eating the calms me but insteads nourishes me. it’s all connected, you know.
I get that Helene. I support you in affirming your power to be in balance–that’s a powerful and loving intention. I so love you! I am with you in your “huge learning curve” and pray for refreshment, strength, peace and rest in the middle of that place. I get to be with you in 12 more days! \o/
